Confessions… of Growing Leader

7 Dec

I work so hard to protect my team from burn out.

Can I be too concerned?  Too protective?

At what point do I leave it up to them?  If burnout occurs, how much of it am I accountable for?

I’m keenly aware of longevity in ministry.  So many people drop off the ministry bandwagon after only a few years of very intense sprinting.  I’m interested in a ministry marathon.

How do you keep your team from ministry burn out?

My burnout key, is lots of non-ministry related activities; when time allows. Whether it’s an hour at the coffee shop, or going to see an afternoon movie.

    Anne,
You kid. But I plan to have a copies on hand… when it’s printed, of course. Better get busy. :)

    JC,
Thanks for the comment. And you’re right. I get caught up in the ‘business’ and fail to stop to just hang out. I’ll be more intentional this month about incorporating breaks like this into the work week. Good stuff.

I set clear expectations, sometimes to the point of not allowing staff to take computers home, ensuring that they have date nights, provide an environment where they are free to ask for time-off…. I also talk to the employees and their spouses and inform them it’s their responsibility to ask for needed time.

Lead them and then say OK, it’s your responsibility… you are Big Boys and Big Girls.
