Parents, Baptism & my 3 cents
20 Jul
I’ve learned in my interactions with parents that we don’t always apply the same logical approach with our kids’ spiritual milestones (like Baptism) as we do their development milestones (like a driver’s license). If there are 3 things I could tell parents about the spiritual development of their child, here they are…
- You can do it. God supplies for all your needs. Especially as it relates to your kids. When you’re the most stumped, remember that God is not.
- It’s okay to say “Not now”. Often our kids ask for things they’re not ready for. Like baptism. It’s okay to delay that action until you are settled with your child’s readiness. Some may advise that the decision is between the child and God, but don’t allow this mentality to hinder your veto power. God has placed you in spiritual authority over your child. Trust how He is directing you and your child… And take both into consideration.
- Look for the fruit. Your child’s readiness for any major milestone has more to do with their maturity, not their ability to verbalize a request. Consider whether they display the ‘fruit’ that is evidence of life-change. In the case of baptism, it’s an outward expression of an inward change. There should be evidence of change.
There you go… My 3 cents. That and $5 will get a you a coffee at Starbucks. Enjoy.
